Setup flow

Side by side: several views at once

Open a channel, a chat, a doc, a project or a task beside the page you're on,
and work in both at once: answer in a channel while you read the doc it's about,
or move cards on a board while the team talks.

Open something beside

  • Alt-click (Option-click on a Mac) any link to a channel, chat, doc, project
or task, in the sidebar, a message or a list.
  • Or hover over it in the sidebar and press the side by side button at the
    end of its row.
  • Or press Ctrl + Alt + \ to put the page you're on beside, which leaves
the main area free for the next thing.

You can have the main page and two more. Drag the dividers between them to
resize. Your layout is remembered in this browser, so the same views are there
next time.

Each side view's bar

  • Focus shows that view alone, full width. Press it again and the others come
back exactly as they were: scroll position, half-written messages, calls.
  • Swap makes it the main view and puts the main view in its place.
  • Close removes it.

Keyboard shortcuts

All of them are Ctrl + Alt (Control + Option on a Mac), so they don't clash with
your browser, the editor, or Ctrl/⌘ + K.

Keys What it does
Ctrl + Alt + 1 / 2 / 3 Go to the main view, the first or the second side view. The cursor lands in its message box or editor.
Ctrl + Alt + [ and ] The previous or next view
Ctrl + Alt + Enter Focus: this view alone, and back
Ctrl + Alt + F Full screen, and back
Ctrl + Alt + S Swap this side view with the main one
Ctrl + Alt + W Close this side view
Ctrl + Alt + \ Open this page side by side
? Every shortcut (when you're not typing)

The view the keys act on is the one you last clicked or typed in; its bar is
marked.

Good to know

  • In a doc, Ctrl + Alt + 1 to 3 still make headings while nothing is side by
    side.
  • On keyboards where AltGr types characters (ś, @, \), AltGr never triggers a
    shortcut.
  • Side by side is for screens with room for it; on a phone, pages open one at a
    time as before.
  • The Ctrl/⌘ + K palette has these under View.
