Check-ins: a question your channel answers on a schedule
A check-in asks a channel a question on a schedule, such as "What did you
work on today?" every weekday at 17:00. The question is posted in the channel
and everyone answers in its thread, so each day's answers sit together. A
check-in can replace a status meeting or a separate standup bot.
Setting one up
Open the channel, choose ⋯ at the top right and then Check-ins. On a
phone, it's the same: ⋯, then Check-ins. Choose New check-in and fill
in:
- The question, up to 300 characters. Write your own or start from a
suggestion, such as "Is anything blocking you?" every weekday at 10:00 or
"What will you work on this week?" on Mondays at 09:30. - The days it's asked on. Weekdays are picked to start with.
- The time it's asked at. It's in your time zone, which is shown under the
time, and the check-in keeps that time zone when someone else edits it.
Then choose Set up check-in. Check-ins lists each one with its schedule
and when it's next asked, for example "Weekdays at 17:00 (Europe/Berlin) · next
Thu 8 Oct, 17:00".
When it's asked
On each chosen day, at that time in that time zone, the Check-in bot posts
the question in the channel. Everyone in the channel is notified, and people who
are away get an email, as with a mention. A question asked on a daylight-saving
day is still asked at that local time. When the clocks skip that time, it's
asked at the first minute after.
If your server was down when a question was due, a question up to two hours late
is still asked. One later than that is skipped, and the next one is asked on
time, so nobody gets a 17:00 question at midnight.
Answering
Reply in the question's thread. Everyone's answers to one day's question stay
together there, and the channel shows how many replies each day's question has.
Changing one
The channel's admins see these beside each check-in:
- Ask now posts the question at once, for a day off-schedule or for a new
team. It won't ask the same check-in twice within a minute. - Edit changes the question, the days or the time. The next time it's asked
follows the new schedule. - Pause stops a check-in until you resume it. It then picks up at its
next time after now. - Delete removes the check-in. Past questions and answers stay in the
channel.
When a channel is archived, its check-ins pause themselves.
Who can do what
- Everyone in the channel sees its check-ins (⋯ → Check-ins) and is asked
them. - The channel's admins and workspace admins set them up, change, pause,
ask now and delete them. - People outside the channel see none of them.
Good to know
- Check-ins are in every edition, the free one included, from OneCamp v2.61.0
(with AI) and v1.46.0 (without AI). - The Check-in bot has no AI behind it. It asks only what the channel's
admins set up, and its name is tagged Bot, not Agent. - A channel can have up to 20 check-ins.
